Terry Nicholas.
Terry Nicholas (Ngāi Tahu, Tainui) has been appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori and governance.
For more than three decades, Terry has provided steadfast leadership in Murihiku, championing the aspirations of whānau and Hokonui Runanga, strengthening community wellbeing, and helping create opportunities for future generations.
As a long-serving representative of Hokonui Rūnanga and a Representative on Te Runanga o Ngāi Tahu since 1999, along with his governance roles on the Audit and Risk and Corporate Governance Committees, Terry has played a significant role in shaping the direction of the iwi, while remaining deeply connected to the needs and aspirations of his people at home. His appointment to Upoko of Hokonui Runanga in 2023 reflects the depth of this trust and confidence that he has earned through a lifetime of service.
Terry’s leadership has also extended beyond iwi governance, through initiatives such as Murihiku Regeneration, where he has championed bold, collaborative approaches to regional development, bringing together iwi, community, business, and government to create enduring outcomes for Murihiku.
This honour recognises not only Terry’s commitment to Māori development and governance, but also his unwavering belief in building a stronger future for those who follow.
Congratulations Terry, on this well-deserved recognition!
